Sally DeJesus is a writer, mother, poet, performer, mixed media artist and workshop facilitator. Since 2005 she has been organizing and offering poetry and art programs for children and women in Concourse House, a homeless shelter in the Bronx, NY, a public high school library, cafes, bookstores and in Crisis Respite Centers (Parachute Houses.) She served as art school teacher at Jacob's Place (via Concourse House) and founded Social Action for Kids Camp. Her poems are published in River & South Review, Manhattan Linear, Metropolitan Review, A New Collection of Bowery Poetry, Mad Gleam Press, Indolent Books, and io Literary Journal’s, What Rough Beast. Ms. DeJesus’ mixed-media sculpture in the South Bronx, Longwood Art Gallery’s 25 Year Contemporary show was featured along with interview in the New York Sun and the New York Times newspapers. Her programs are funded by Poets & Writers, Community Access, Citizens for NYC Community Grants, Fountain House, and the NYC Department of Mental Health and Hygiene for East Harlem Health Action Center. Ms. DeJesus worked as Literacy Resource Liaison for the groundbreaking in-shelter library at Concourse Home for Women and their children, creating and facilitated reading, writing & spoken word events for children, as well as resume writing, poetry writing and book reading groups for their mothers, in the shelter. Poetry Speaks for Us, a M/WBE small business, empowers all ages via writing and spoken word. In person or virtual workshops provide tools that engage peer to peer, community, social and emotional support that can build stronger connections and social relations.
